ANNULLI FILATELICI - PHILATELIC CANCELLATION

The first act of the Information Service in the vast field of propaganda was to obtain the application of a special cancellation to the machine to be franked in use at the CONI post office in Rome (Foro Italico). This special stamp, highly sought after by collectors, came into force in November 1953 and was modified in March 1954, with the addition of the exact dates of the Olympic event.

Two actual postal cancellations occurred for the inauguration of the two main sports facilities, built specifically for the Olympic Games: the Stadio del Ghiaccio and the Trampolino Italia. Both were placed in the Cortina post office: the first day on October 26, 1955 (mechanical, type «flame»), wording: «VII Olympic Winter Games - Cortina d'Ampezzo - Inauguration of the Ice Stadium"; the second, on December 8, 1955 (identical to the previous one with only the variation of the third line, which bears the wording «Inauguration of Trampolino Italia»).

The long series of actual commemorative cancellations begins on January 22, at the Rome Campidoglio post office, on the occasion of the departure of the Olympic Flame from Rome. The «Torch Relay» was commemorated with two cancellations: 1) January 22, 1956 - Rome Post Office - Capitoline Hill: mechanical drawing; left (five rings and stylized profile of Mount Pomagagnon) - Cortina 1956 - Torch Relay; right: date stamp with outline reproducing the snow crystal, which is in the symbol of the Cortina Winter Games; wording «VII Olympic Winter Games - Rome - Campidoglio». In the lunette at the top there is a five-pointed star; in the one at the bottom, the five Olympic rings; 2) January 23, 1956 - identical to the previous one, with the only variation being the Post Office of issue, which is «Venice San Marco».

All Postal Offices had available, in addition to the above mentioned manual and mechanical cancellations, two linear cancellations for each office to be used to cancel the registered mail leaving from those offices. Each pair of those cancellations, even if apparently the same, had very slight differences between them.
