GINNASTICA MASCHILE - MEN'S GYMNASTICS
In the other major Olympic sport, gymnastics, the USSR swept the competition, winning 15 out of 16 medals in the women’s events. The standout performer was once again Larissa Latynina, who won 6 medals, including 3 gold, just as she had in Melbourne, and made it to the podium in every event she competed in. In the men’s events, the Soviet team’s usual dominance was effectively challenged only by the Japanese gymnasts, who managed to win four golds, including the first of five consecutive Olympic golds in the team competition. The standout gymnast in Rome, however, was a Soviet: Boris Shakhlin, who made it to the podium on seven out of eight occasions and won four golds.
