STADIO OLIMPICO - Le origini
OLYMPIC STADIUM - Origins
In its first form, the stadium was designed and built as part of the larger project of the City of Sport called Foro Mussolini (renamed Foro Italico after the war). Work began in 1927, designed by architect Enrico Del Debbio; it was inaugurated in 1932 up to the first ring. There were no plans to build walls, only to renovate the gigantic reservoir and the stands made up of grassy terraces and decorated, within its perimeter, with cypress trees and other trees, so much so that it was immediately dubbed the "Cypress Stadium" by the press.
Subsequently, Renato Ricci, President of the Opera Nazionale Balilla, entrusted engineers Frisa and Pintonello with the definitive study of the project and the execution. And so in 1936/37 more stands were added to the first ring of the Stadio dei Cipressi. Due to its planned capacity, the stadium acquired a new name: "dei Centomila", but was also called "Olimpionico".
