TUFFI - DONNE
DIVING - WOMEN

In the women's diving competition, no one thought it possible that the two titles would elude American divers; nothing suggested any surprises. The final competition of the 3-meter springboard took place on September 27, starting at 3:50 pm. After the preliminary and semifinal dives, an absolutely disconcerting ranking had emerged for the Americans, with Paula Myers-Pope and Patsy Willard relegated to fourth and sixth place and Germany's Kramer to first, ahead of the Soviet Ninel' Krutova and Canada's Irene McDonald. In the three-dive finale, Kramer increased her lead over the others. Pope rallied to earn silver while bronze went to England's Liz Ferris.
The performances of Dresden diver Ingrid Kramer sparked such enthusiasm in the imagination of German journalists that they filled dozens of pages recounting the victories of the very young athlete from the East. The newspaper "Neues Dutschland", for example, described Kramer's competition from the springboard as follows:
"Until recently she was leaning against the fence, with her turquoise bathrobe, her hood over her tsta, her arms crossed, without thoughts, like any of the countless, anonymous, young mermaids that emerge from the water from one of the hundreds of thousands of pools scattered throughout the world, wrapping themselves in a baggno cloth, but suddenly, she takes off her bathrobe, her body stretched out in her blue costume, and how he swam in the air he mentioned the movements of his jump once, twice, as he does at every test. She then climbed the steps of the tower to three meters. And while the judges, gathered under large, colorful tents to protect themselves from the fury of the blinding sun, fixed their attention on her, while her name lit up and shone on the electronic scoreboard, while ten thousand spectators, in the Swimming Stadium, flooded with light, held their breath, she soared into the air. And suddenly she became the one who stands out from everyone else, the superior, the unparalleled, the best springboard diver in the world, who went to seize the triumph of her life. Like an arrow stuck itself into the water, whose surface benevolently welcomed her, and when her young, fresh face resurfaced, the blond of her hair seemed to radiate a light twice as intense as before. Confirmation of the electronic brain was a pure formality. The jubilation of the crowd, the incessant singing, the uncontainable enthusiasm of those who had come to follow her, had already announced it for a long time: Ingrid Kramer, the seventeen-year-old student from the German Democratic Republic, had emerged from the water like the golden girl."

Although that marked the end of the U.S. gold medal streak, which had been unbroken since the 1920 Antwerp Olympics, Paula Jean Myers Pope, who finished second, was not disappointed: “She beat me decisively on the springboard,” she said afterward, referring to Kramer. “I won the silver medal, and I’m very happy.” Part of his satisfaction was due to the fact that his specialty was Platform (final on August 30), there he hoped to redeem himself by winning gold. But even from the Platform, the German repeated herself, and once again the American had to settle for the silver medal.
