PATTINAGGIO DI VELOCITA' - SPEED SKATING

Passione, forza e... velocità

Passion, Strength, and... speed
The speed skating competitions at the XX Winter Olympic Games were held from February 11 to 25 at the Oval Lingotto in Turin.

There are many ways to be the fastest. You can even succeed twice in the same race. And the most significant record is not necessarily the one set by the time trial. It's the story of American Shani Davis, gold medalist in the 1,000 meters in speed skating ahead of compatriot Cheek and the favorite, Dutchman Wennemars. Because Davis - who also won silver in the 1,500m - didn't simply set the fastest time: he was, above all, the first African-American to win an individual title at the Winter Olympics. The fastest, in fact, to cross this milestone (from the Official Report of the CO).

It's called "Right To Play" and is a humanitarian organization that assists children in refugee camps, trying to keep them away from crime and abuse. It was founded by Norwegian former Olympic long track champion Johann Olav Koss. It was to "Right To Play" that Joey Cheek donated the prize money he received from the U.S. Olympic Committee for the two medals he won in Turin, gold in the 500 meters and silver in the 1,000 meters. Cheek, who comes from inline skating and had already reached the podium for bronze in the 1,000m in Salt Lake City, personally raised $40,000 and encouraged some clubs - but also other athletes, such as Canadian Clara Hughes, gold in the 5,000m women - to make a donation of their own (from the CO Official Report).

In the Netherlands, where speed skating is a front-page sport, it made more headlines than the Champions League. Because his successes - two golds (1,500 meters, ahead of the American champions Davis and Hedrick and team pursuit) and a bronze (5,000, won by Hedrick himself) - did not only make noise in Italy. It's the story of Enrico Fabris da Roana, in the province of Vicenza, 24 years old, the right physicist starting from a profile that seems to cut through Paria, an innate ability to manage energy and time trial. With his successes, the cover man of this sport, in Turin 2006 he deserves credit for having introduced Italy to an adrenaline-filled discipline (from the Official Report of the CO)..

In the men's 5,000-meter speed skating event, held on the first day of competition at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, American Chad Hedrick, a former inline skater, ran a time of 6:14.68, just 0.02 seconds shy of Jochem Uytdehaage's Olympic record, but enough to win the gold medal. Silver medal for Dutchman Sven Kramer, behind by 1.72 seconds, while home skater Enrico Fabris won the first Italian medal of this Olympics

There are only a few hundred high-level speed skaters in Italy. This data is enough to understand the value not only of Enrico Fabris's successes but also of the Italian gold in the team pursuit, won by Fabris himself, by Ippolito Sanfratello (holder of eight world titles on wheels) and by Matteo Anesi, the youngest, not to mention Stefano Donagrandi, who competed in the preliminary rounds. A gold favored by bad luck that betrayed the Dutch masters in the semi-final (Kramer, silver in the 5,000m, had the sin of tripping over the plastic support of the track) but then deserved by dominating the Canadians in the last race.
