ROMA 1908

The London 1908 Olympic Games were actually the fifth edition of the modern era, following the so-called Intermediate Olympic Games held in Athens in 1906, later considered only as the ten-year anniversary of the first Olympic Games in Athens (1896) and which, at the request of Pierre de Coubertin, president of the International Olympic Committee, did not enter into the official count of Olympic editions.

The London Games returned to the four-yearly schedule established at the start of the modern Olympic Games. In 1901, the representative of the German IOC presented Berlin's candidacy as the venue for the 1908 Games, and in 1903 the Italian Gymnastics Federation nominated the city of Rome, immediately supported by the municipal administration, giving it official status. Pierre de Coubertin made no secret of his preference for Rome over Berlin, and in fact in 1905, after a long stay in Rome, the then President of the IOC said that the Capital of Italy would be the ideal city to reawaken the enthusiasm and charm of the Games, mortified by the stormy editions of 1900 and 1904, both combined with equally chaotic exhibitions.
"Only Rome can give back to the Olympics what Paris and St. Louis took from them," the French baron wrote to his wife, then on June 22, 1904, at a IOC meeting held in London, German representatives (who had not received any official support at home) withdrew their city's candidacy and the organization of the 1908 Olympic Games was assigned to Rome. An Organizing Committee was immediately formed, which first drew up a map of the locations where the competitions were to be held: the opening ceremony on the solemnity of the Capitoline Hill, boxing and wrestling in the fascinating setting of the Baths of Caracalla, athletics in the majesty of Piazza di Siena, swimming and rowing in the tranquil stretch of Tiber between the Milvio and Margherita bridges, and the marathon along a picturesque route around the Imperial Forums.

Unfortunately, however, after months of inactivity, the Roman organizing committee, given the impossibility of financing the event, dissolved in 1906. Thus came the resignation of the Giolitti government (struggling with financial crisis, general strikes, popular uprisings), which instead of the Olympic Games put the construction of the Simplon tunnel, support for the population that had escaped the Vesuvius explosion, and the earthquake victims of Calabria and Sicily at the top of its priorities. Berlin did not submit a new bid and so the British Olympic Association (BOA) took over, offering to organise the games in London. On 24 November 1906, the BOA issued a press release officially announcing that the Games would take place in the British capital.
