LOTTA LIBERA - FREESTYLE WRESTLING

On September 1, Greco-Roman wrestling gave way to freestyle wrestling. In this discipline, it was thought that the showdown between the Soviets and the Turks would be even more intense than in Greco-Roman wrestling, as these were cunning, vigorous, and ruthless wrestlers. Given the results of the Melbourne Games, the list of nations in contention for the various podium spots also had to include the Bulgarians, the Japanese, and the Iranians, while the Americans could provide some surprises. All the tournaments were intense and full of surprises, and the matches were much faster-paced than in Greco-Roman wrestling.
In the flyweight division, Turkey’s Ahmet Bilek emerged victorious. The favorite, the Soviet Ali Aliev, missed his chance at the podium in his fifth match, when he was knocked down by Iran’s Sadibadi Moha Seifpour, who ultimately won only the bronze medal after losing on points in the final to Turkey’s Bilek, the gold medalist. The silver medal went to Masayuki Matsubara of Japan.

In the Bantamweight division, 19 wrestlers competed, and there was a surprise victory by the American Terrence McCann, who unexpectedly won the gold medal with six wins and only one loss, to the Finn Jaskari. Behind him were the Bulgarian Nezhdet Zalev and the Pole Tadeusz Trojanowski. It was not to be for the favorite, Mikhail Shakhov (USSR), who was eliminated in the early rounds.

In the Featherweight division (25 wrestlers competing), however, there were no surprises. The favorite, Turkey’s Mustafa Daginstali, had no trouble, and by the fifth round it was already fairly certain that the gold would go to the Turkish wrestler. Daginstali was a wrestler of exceptional technique, and the strong performances by Japan’s Tamiji Sato (considered the most dangerous rival for the Turkish world champion), the Soviet Vladimir Rubashvili, and, above all, Bulgaria’s Stantcho Ivanov, who was defeated on points in the final match, were to no avail.

In the lightweight division, another marathon bout and another unexpected victory for the U.S. Among the favorites were Turkey’s Hayrullah Sahin, Japan’s Kazuo Abe, Iran’s Mostafa Tajiki, and the Soviet Union’s Vladimir Syniavskiy, but the young American Shelby Wilson—competing in his first Olympics as McCann-silenced them all. Wilson, with an incredible string of victories (defeating, in order, Parkash Gian of India, Martti Peltoniemi of Finland, Abe, Syniavskiy, and finally Tajiki), won the tournament, leaving the silver to the Soviet athlete and the bronze to Enyu Valchev of Bulgaria.
In the higher weight classes, experts had expected a fierce battle between the Soviets and the Middle Easterners, but instead an American came in third. In the welterweight division, Douglas Blubaugh of the United States-who also had an endless string of victories-took home the gold medal, leaving the silver to Ismail Ogan and the bronze to Muhammad Bashir of Pakistan.

In the middleweight division, with 19 wrestlers competing, the two favorites-Hasan Gungor of Turkey and Georgyi Skhirtladze of the Soviet Union-took the top two spots on the podium. But they didn’t have it easy. The contest was decided in the fifth round, when Gungor knocked out American Edward Dewitt in five minutes-a victory that would have been enough for Dewitt to claim the title, even with a points decision in his favor. In the other match, Skhirtladze tied with the Swede Hans Antonsson, but thanks to Dewitt’s decisive defeat, he claimed the silver. Antonsson took home the bronze.

In the light heavyweight division, the Iranian Cholam Reza Takhiti, the overwhelming favorite, seemed to dominate the tournament with his superior skill. Takhiti made his debut by defeating the Afghan Gunga Ghulam Mohiddin-who was by no means a novice-in just a few seconds. He then knocked out Australian Patrick Parson in three minutes, Kazuo Abe in two minutes, Hungarian Gyorgy Gurics in five minutes, and finally South African Hermanus Van Zyl. At that point, just when it seemed Takhiti had the gold in the bag-with a five-penalty lead over the sole remaining competitor, the Turkish fighter Ismet Atli-Takhiti had to face him in the final… and lost on points. The bronze medal went to the Swede Viking Palm.

In the heavyweight division, many considered the victory of the Turkish boxer Hamit Kaplan a foregone conclusion; he was a strong athlete with first-rate technique and style. Among the favorites were also the Swede Bertil Antonsson and the Soviet Savkuz Dzarasov. In the second round, Kaplan tied with the Bulgarian Liutvi Djiber; then, after a couple of victories, he tied again with the Soviet Dzarasov, giving the German Wilfried Dietrich-the tournament’s breakout star-a chance to take the lead, which he did thanks to a victory before the limit against the Italian Maniscalchi. As the tournament continued, the German defeated the Soviet fighter and then drew with the Turkish fighter, winning the gold medal. The silver and bronze medals went to the disappointed Kaplan and Dzarasov.
