IL VIAGGIO - THE  TRIP

On November 25, 2005, on the plain above Olympia, the first priestess of the temple of Hera, played by the beautiful Thoedora Siorkou, after the classic evocation to Apollo, generated the sacred fire from which the fire for the Olympic torch was obtained. After the flame was created, the priestesses collected an olive branch offered by a boy. With this same branch and with the flame contained in a small brazier, the 19 priestesses went to the plain named after Baron De Coubertin. Then with the sacred fire they lit the Italian torch which was delivered to the first torchbearer Kostas Filippidis, who began the journey with the torch towards Turin. The torch traveled 2,006 kilometers in Greece and on December 6, in Athens, it was delivered to the organizers of the Winter Olympic Games in Turin

The following day the sacred fire arrived in Rome to resume its journey on December 8, when the President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi lit the torch of Stefano Baldini, the first Italian torchbearer of "Torino 2006". Then for two months the torch with the sacred fire crossed the entire national territory. The borders of the countries bordering Italy were also crossed: Vatican City, the Republic of San Marino, Slovenia, Austria, Switzerland and France.

I too took part in that splendid "journey", carrying the Olympic torch from Ariccia to Albano.
