VELODROMO OLIMPICO - OLYMPIC VELODROME
Il Velodromo Olimpico all'EUR fu progettato dagli Architetti Cesare Ligini, Dagoberto Ortensi e Silvano Ricci, l'opera nacque nella zona del viale dell'Oceano Pacifico, su una superficie complessiva di mq. 65.000. I lavori furono diretti dall'Ingegner. Francesco Guidi. La pista invece, venne progettata dagli Architetti Clemens ed Herbert Schurmann ed era caratterizzata dal piano di scorrimento con pendenze crescenti dal suo asse minore all'asse maggiore in curva e soprattutto da particolari accorgimenti applicati nell'entrata e nell'uscita di curva, allo scopo di evitare variazioni di sforzi in questi punti, sia agli stayers che agli sprinters. La collaborazione dell'Istituto Sperimentale del Legno di Firenze, diretto dal Prof. Guglielmo Giordano, permise di individuare, attraverso una serie di prove di laboratorio, il legname idoneo e la scelta cadde sul legno Doussiè del Camerùn, materiale a fibra compatta e resistente agli agenti atmosferici ed agli attacchi dei funghi.

The Olympic Velodrome in EUR was designed by architects Cesare Ligini, Dagoberto Ortensi and Silvano Ricci, the work was born in the area of the Pacific Ocean avenue, on a total surface area of 1,000 square meters. 65,000. The work was directed by the Engineer. Francesco Guidi. The track, on the other hand, was designed by Architects Clemens and Herbert Schurmann and was characterised by the sliding plane with increasing slopes from its minor axis to the major axis when cornering and above all by particular measures applied when entering and exiting corners, with the aim of avoiding variations in stress at these points, both for stayers and sprinters. The collaboration of the Experimental Wood Institute of Florence, directed by Professor Guglielmo Giordano, allowed us to identify, through a series of laboratory tests, the suitable wood, and the choice fell on Doussiè del Camerùn wood, a compact fiber material resistant to atmospheric agents and fungal attacks.
Scelto il progetto, nel 1957 partirono i lavori per la costruzione del Velodromo più perfetto e bello del mondo.

Il 30 aprile 1960, alla presenza di numerose autorità sportive e politiche, l'impianto venne ufficialmente inaugurato.

L'impianto, durante la rassegna olimpica del 1960, ospitò le gare di ciclismo su pista: velocità e chilometro a cronometro ed alcune gare di Hockey nel prato in mezzo alla pista.
During the 1960 Olympic Games, the facility hosted track cycling events: speed and kilometre time trials and some hockey events on the lawn in the middle of the track.
