  • che tali oggetti sono, in prevalenza, di mia proprietà, acquistati in aste nazionali ed internazionali o da mercanti di memorabilia e antiquariato, oppure anche scovati nei tradizionali mercatini dell’usato;
  • che il materiale in visione se non è parte delle mie collezioni è comunque messo a disposizione da amici collezionisti che lo detengono legalmente, anch’essi, nelle loro private e spesso invidiabili collezioni;
Mario

Dear friends, after a pause for reflection lasting 5 long months, and after having resolved an unfortunate copyright problem that forced me to make a depressing negotiation (as you know, my editorial project shuns any profit-making purpose, especially since I am and remain the legitimate owner/holder of the material I publish), I have the pleasure of announcing that the website is back online, revised, corrected, expanded and, I hope, improved.

I inform, however, those who, for whatever reason, will visit us:

  • that the items shown in the various sections of the site are not for sale;
  • that these objects are, predominantly, my property, purchased at national and international auctions or by memorabilia and antiques dealers, or even                    discovered in traditional second-hand markets;
  • that the material being viewed, if it is not part of my collections, is in any case made available by collector friends who also legally hold it in their private and often enviable collections;
  • that my site has no commercial purposes (it is not sold, it is not bought and it is not advertised), but informative, educational and research purposes.
  • that these pages and this patient work, done without any expertise in “programming”, “computer science”, “software and hardware”, is only meant to be a window into the world of Olympism but, above all, into that of the Olympics held in Italy… without the help of any sponsor.

The site reopens with the usual modest ambition of disseminating news and reports on the Olympics and the athletes who were involved. You will find us testimonies of the exciting competitions that originally had the power to suspend conflicts by sublimating them into the agón (ἀγών), into the sports gathering.

The Olympics, therefore, as a teaching of peace, as an opportunity to remove the strength of men from the battlefields and bend it to an instrument of friendship and knowledge among people.  One last clarification: the site can now be reached with this link www.leolimpiadiditalia.com and no longer with the old one “leolimpiadiditalia.it”.

PS for foreign friends: “be kind to the English translation, unfortunately I don't know the language: therefore be kind enough to attribute any errors to the “online translators” and only to them. Mario
Nowadays, like 66 years ago, time passes by quickly. Memories, also the nicest, fade away rapidly: it is a characteristic of this short lapse of time and the direct consequence of a longing for renewal and overcoming that makes us always look ahead, pursue new conquests, avoiding those halts, though short, which allow us to catch our breath and re-examine what has been done with calm objectivity. From the moment Rome 1960 Olympic Games closed, for example, a loud and inviting "See you in Tokyo" rose, as if all what had happened in those Games was not interesting any longer; as if there was a haste to close one of the most exciting history chapters ever written.

And it was just to fix a lasting memory of unparalleled events such as the Olympic Games of Cortina 1956 and of Rome 1960, Torino 2006 and Milano Cortina 2026, and to pay them a tribute, that I decided to collect some mementos and documents of those extraordinary events. Since the approaching march towards such important events has always been long and difficult, as well as burdensome and hard-won, I have included in this collection documents from other editions of the Games for which Italy, unfortunately without success, had applied to the IOC to host.

A special thanks to my friends Pasquale Polo and the regretful Alfiero Ronsisvalle and Maurizio Tecardi, without whom I would not have been able to put together all the material listed and which allowed me to accomplish this work. Thanks also to my friends Giovanni Rolle, with whom I will update the pages dedicated to the Turin 2006 Winter Games museum, and Elio Grossi for making his archive of Olympic tickets available to me. However, corrections, punctuations or even pictures of objects and souvenirs of these editions of the Olympic Games or anything else that might be useful to make this site more and more accurate and up-to-date are welcome, thank you.
