Il Fuoco sostò l'intera notte, vigilata da Agenti della Polizia Municipale di Roma, nella superba cornice dei Palazzi Michelangioleschi, sul Campidoglio, mentre la Bandiera Olimpica garriva sulla torre Capitolina.

The Fire stopped the whole night, supervised by Officers of the Municipal Police of Rome, in the superb setting of the Palazzi Michelangioleschi, on the Capitoline Hill, while the Olympic Flag flew over the Capitoline Tower.

All'indomani, alla presenza del Sindaco di Roma e di larghe rappresentanze del Governo, delle Forze Armate e del Comitato Organizzatore, la staffetta riprese la sua corsa per giungere, dopo aver attraversato via del Corso e via Flaminia, nello Stadio Olimpico, alle ore 17,30, nell'attimo in cui si svolgeva la Cerimonia d'Apertura.

L'onore di accendere il tripode nello Stadio Olimpico, toccò a uno studente di Civitavecchia, Giancarlo Peris, che in quell'anno aveva vinto i campionati nazionali studenteschi nei 1000 m. La scelta di questo giovane atleta sottolineava come la ricostruzione dello sport italiano fosse partita dalla scuola, proprio attraverso l'istituzione dei campionati studenteschi.

The honor of lighting the tripod in the Stadio Olimpico went to a student from Civitavecchia, Giancarlo Peris, who that year had won the national student championships in the 1000 m. The choice of this young athlete emphasized how the reconstruction of Italian sport began with school, precisely through the establishment of student championships.
