SOLLEVAMENTO PESI - WEIGHTLIFTING

From September 7th to 10th, 172 weightlifters from 53 nations faced each other at the Palazzetto dello Sport, liberated by Basketball. The USSR won five gold medals and one silver, also improving five world records; the USA won one gold medal, four silver medals, and one bronze; Poland won one gold medal and one bronze medal, improving a world record. The only ones to repeat Melbourne's success were the American Charles Vinci in the bantamweight and the Soviet Arkadi Vorobiev in the light heavyweight. The great “Tommy” Kono, who was aiming for a third gold medal, was defeated in the middleweight division by Alexandr Kurinov. In the heavyweight category, Yuri Vlasov (USSR) set two exceptional records: in the clean and jerk with 202.5 kg and in the total with 537.5 kg, beating Paul Anderson's record by a full 25 kg, who in 1955 had been the first to lift more than 5 quintals.
On Wednesday, September 7, the first race, the "BANTAMWEIGHT CLASS", started. A fight of excitement was being considered between the American of Italian origins Charles Vinci and the Soviet Vladimir Stogov (gold and silver in Melbourne), with the Japanese Miyake the third wheel.
Also on September 7, in the "FEATHERWEIGHT CLASS", Soviet Yevgeni Minaev took his revenge on American Isaac Berger who had beaten him in Melbourne. The Soviet immediately moved forward in the détente and increased the gap in momentum, finishing at 372.5 kg. Berger's attempt to reach him was in vain. Third was Italian Sebastiano Mannironi.

At 9 pm on September 8th, the "MIDDLEWEIGHT CLASS" competition began, where the USA-USSR duel between multiple Olympic champion, American Tommy Kono and Soviet Alexander Kurynov resumed. Kono started strong, equaling the world championship in the slow press, then Kurynov caught up with his rival, setting the Olympic record. The final test, momentum, decided the challenge in favor of the Soviet. Bronze for Hungarian Veres.

In the "LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT CLASS", after the withdrawal of world champion and heavy favourite Pluckfelder (USSR), the match was narrow between the American George and the Poles Palinski and Bochenek. The two Poles conducted a very tactical race, gripping the American with their decisions to "try" or "pass" the individual lifts. George, leading after the first exercises, collapsed in the clean and jerk events, leaving Palinski with gold but managing to win a deserved silver.

On the afternoon of September 9th, the "MAXIMUM-LIGHT" competition took place. Some hoped that England's Louis Martin could challenge the supremacy of the Soviets who were running alongside Trofim Lomakin and the defending Olympic champion Arkadi Vorobyev. Hopes that were in vain because the Soviets won both gold with Vorobyev and silver with Lomakin. Only the bronze peer the British Martin.

On September 10, all the newspapers wrote "At the Palazzetto dello Sport a battle between giants". And in fact, the final USA-USSR match was on stage, between the very strong Soviet Yuri Vlasov and the two strongest American champions: Bradford and Shemanski. The race closed at three o'clock in the morning and was a continuous exchange of the leading position between Vlasov and Bradford. It was now clear that the gold medal would be decided by the "momentum", in which Vlasov was superior. And so it was. Vlasov first lifted the 190 kg he needed to win gold and then, overcome by enthusiasm, increased the weight to 202 kg (a new world record), managing to lift the barbell in a split second... a triumph for the Soviet.
