The Skeet Shooting competitions took place at the Lazio clay pigeon shooting range, located at Via Eugenio Vajna 21, immediately adjacent to Piazzale delle Muse, approximately 1 km from the Olympic Village. The facility, completely restored and equipped with the most modern launch machines, covers an area of just over 1,000 square meters. 5,500 and has a space reserved for the public with the possibility of reception for approximately 2,000 people, part of whom are placed on a large terrace created above the social building.

The preliminary round brought 36 shooters to the final. The day of the final was blowing a strong wind due to which the results were not exciting. The gold medal was won by the very young Romanian Ion Dumitrescu with 192 clays scored out of 200, while the reigning Olympic champion, the Italian Galliano Rossini, with 191 clays, had to settle for the silver medal. Bronze for Soviet shooter Sergei Kalinin.
Toccò quindi a Rossini entrare nelle pedane numerate.
On the first day of the final (September 8), favorites Nkandrov and Anderson immediately disappeared from the field. After the hundredth clay pigeon, the fight for gold seemed to narrow to Kalinin, with 99 clay pigeon and Rossini with 98. A threat could be posed by Smelzeynski and Wheater at 96, Clark and Dumitrescu with 94 clays. In the first series of 25 clays on the second day of the final (9 September), Romanian Dumitrescu showed off, hitting all 25 clays, while the others incurred some empty shots. In the second series of the morning, the protagonist was again Dumitrescu with another full pass: 25/25, while Kalinin (first up to that point), with 3 errors, left first place to the Italian Rossini, also, however, with an error in this second run and with a total of 145/150, behind him Dumitrescu on 144 and Kalinin on 143. In the afternoon the last two series began. In the third Rossini, with a 24/25, maintained the leadership, totaling 169/175. Kalinin, with a magnificent 25/25, tied Dumitrescu in second place who, having made the first mistake of the day, moved to 168/175. In the final series, the first to take to the track was the Romanian, who finished with just one error and a total of 192/200, far from Rossini's Olympic record, when in Melbourne he had won with 195/200. Then it was Kalinin's turn who, carried away by emotion, closed at 190/200. It was then Rossini's turn to enter the numbered platforms. The Italian now had a margin of two clays over the Romanian and four over the Soviet, but he too was betrayed by emotion or perhaps by a gust of wind that had meanwhile risen on the shooting range, committed three errors and had to leave the gold to Dumitrescu.
