In tribuna molte autorità politiche, militari e sportive.

At 6:45 PM on September 11, the Closing Ceremony began at the Stadio Olimpico, immediately after the awards ceremony for the Team Jumping Equestrian Grand Prix, which took place in the morning and early afternoon at that very stadium. This time the athletes did not parade behind the respective nations' drapes, but mixed together. In the stands many political, military and sporting authorities. President Gronchi was not present but the Queens of Greece and Holland were present.

By the time of the Closing Ceremony, many of the protagonists had already returned home and the nations were represented by isolated flag bearers who marched in a single row and stopped to form an arch in the centre of the field, while President Brundage climbed onto the podium from where he declared the Games of the XVII Olympiad closed, making an appointment in Tokyo in 1964. As the flame in the Stadium's brazier slowly died down, the choir of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia sang the Olympic Anthem and the five-circle flag descended the flagpole. As darkness fell across the scene, tens of thousands of spectators spontaneously lit up the night by lighting torches made from newspaper. Then the words "Goodbye to Tokyo" appeared on the illuminated board and it was, for everyone present, a moment of great emotion.
