L'argento andò all'altro sovietico in gara, Yuryi Sisikin e il bronzo all'americano Albert Axerold.
The foil tournaments were held from August 29 to September 3. The first to take to the platform were the foil fencers (29-30 August) and in this specialty the very favourite was the Frenchman Christian D'Oriola, world champion and two-time Olympic champion. But D'Oriola failed the goal. He reached the final with difficulty where, tired and slow in his actions, he gave up, so much so that from the challenge against the Soviet Mark Midler he emerged humiliated (5 to 0) and booed loudly by the French who were attending the matches at the Palazzo dei Congressi. The title, in the end, was deserved by the Soviet Zhdanovic who, confident and precise, won all seven final assaults. In his last effort the Soviet beat D'oriola himself, in what seemed like a passing of the baton between the old French school and the new Soviet school. The silver went to the other Soviet competitor, Yuryi Sisikin, and the bronze to American Albert Axerold.

On August 31st and September 1st, the women's foil competition took place with 57 fencers from 27 countries in action. The victory was expected of world champion Alexandra Zabelina or reigning Olympic champion Gillian Sheen, or perhaps the strong Hungarian Lídia Dömölky or even the home champion Antonella Ragno. Instead both Zabelina and Sheen were eliminated in the quarter-finals. In the eight-a-side final, the talent of German Adelheid Schmid emerged, who, with six victories and just one defeat, won gold ahead of Soviet Rastvorova and Romanian Maria Vicol.

In the women's team foil competition (held on September 1), the Russians took revenge, aided by the captain of the German team who, not considering the fact that Schmid was exhausted and psychologically satisfied with the unexpected success, fielded her with the team. And in fact, the new Olympic champion betrayed her teammates in the semifinal against the Soviets, losing all four of her attacks and also in the bronze medal match against the Italians, she suffered only one narrow victory and three defeats. In the gold medal match, the Soviets Petrenko, Rastvorova, Shishova and Prudskova easily won against the Hungarians.
