DIVING - MEN

The ransom for the US colors came from the men. Starting with the 3-meter Trampoline. After the mandatory dives on the morning of the 27th, with 32 competitors in contention, the predictions were confirmed with the two Americans Sam Hall and Gary Tobian in the top two places followed by the Mexican Juan Botella. In the afternoon semi-final (free diving), the top three places did not change. In the eight-man final on the evening of the 29th, the Americans showed off all very high coefficients and took home gold with Tobian and silver with Hall, behind them, bronze medalist, Mexican Botella.

In the 10-meter race, Tobian was outwitted by his compatriot Bob Webster, but only by a fraction of a point: 165.56 to 165.25. Webster began the final round of three dives on September 2 behind Tobian and Britain's Brian Phels. He moved ahead of Phels with a triple and a half somersault and overtook Tobian on the ninth dive thanks to a “double forward twist with a somersault and a half.” On his final dive, Webster performed another difficult dive that drew enthusiastic applause from the crowd and a score of 21.12 from the seven judges, earning him the gold medal. Tobian’s best dive of the evening wasn’t enough to overtake his compatriot. The bronze medal went to 16-year-old British diver Phels.
