The triumph of the Soviets in foil caused a surge of pride in the Italian squadron. The response was not long in coming and arrived, punctually, in the sword, the heaviest weapon in fencing. The individual event began on the morning of September 5th and concluded the following day. Eighty fencers began fighting for gold. Among the favorites are England's William Hoskyns, already world champion in the specialty, followed by Hungary's Jozsef Sakotis, France's Mouyal and Dreyfus, and Italy's Pellegrino, Delfino, and Breda.

But the heavily favoured Englishman was sensationally eliminated in the second round while two of the Italians (Breda and Delfino), by winning their group, gained access to the eight-a-side final together with the two Frenchmen, the Hungarian, the Soviet, the other British Allan Jay and the Belgian Roger Achten.

The most experienced of the finalist lot was the Italian Giuseppe Delfino, already silver in Melbourne but also team gold in both Helsinki and Melbourne.

Poi scesero in pedana Delfino e Jay.

The final was very intense and hard-fought. Many assaults went to the additional thrust. In the end, Delfino scored a winning five-shot haul as Jay, Khabarov and Sakovits stopped at four and at the end of the tournament they had to play off for bronze. Jay would have won the gold if he had won the final assault against Khabarov, who took out all his pride and beat the Englishman 5 to 2, forcing him to play a tiebreaker with the Italian. So two play-offs for the medals. In the first, the one for bronze, the Soviet won, after a very hard-fought assault, which ended 8 to 7. Then Delfino and Jay stepped onto the platform. From the first signs, Delfino's wonderful determination was clear, as at thirty-eight he did not want to miss his last chance at an individual Olympic gold medal. And so, after the fifth and decisive thrust he scored, "Pippo" (his fans cheered him on with this nickname) was carried in triumph by the blue clan. Jay barely managed to make his way across the platform, to go and hug the old Olympian who had triumphed that evening.

Allan Jay

The team event took place on September 9th, with 21 quintets competing. The predictions on the eve gave the following podium: Italy, Hungary, USSR. But the Magyars, beaten in the semi-final by the British, were excluded from the final while the Italians (Delfino, Mangiarotti, Pellegrino, Pavesi and Saccaro) beat the Soviets 9 to 6 and joined Allan Jay and company in the final that awarded the Olympic gold. In this final that awarded gold to the home national team (9 assaults against 4), there was a very beautiful and high moment from the point of view of fair play. On the ninth platform assault were Delfino and Jay, the individual finalists. It was a rematch for the Englishman, who at the barrage had seen the most precious medal blown by the Italian. Within seconds, the partisan crowd was shouting "booohs" at Jay, who was aggressively forcing the home athlete into a full retreat. At that point Dauphin removed his mask and, with an imperious gesture, reduced the crowd to silence. Then the two fencers bowed and, smiling, continued the assault, which ended with the Englishman winning 5-4. The bronze medal was placed around the neck of the Soviets.
