VELA - SAILING

The classes present against the magical backdrop of the Gulf of Naples were five: Finn (single-seater hull with reduced sail where the pilot's skill is very important), Flying Dutchman (two-seater round-hulled boat, weighing around 160 kg), Dragone (boat of around 10 metres, with crews of three men), Star (two-seater boat with a angular hull and fin keel, with a tonnage of approximately 630 kg.) and 5.5 SI (boat of over 10 metres at the keel). The competitions of the "Neapolitan" Olympics, organized by the USVI (Unione Società Veliche Italiane), began with the opening ceremony of the Sailing Games, on the evening of August 28, at the small port of Santa Lucia. The regattas were held from August 29 to September 7.

On the morning of August 29, the white sails began their Olympic sarabande on the three racing courses prepared by the Navy and distinguished with three different colors: blue for the Finn, yellow for the Star and Flying Dutchman and red for Dragoni and 5.5.

The first race ended with the victory of the Danes Berntsen, Hancke and Christensen in the 5.5 class, in the Finn another Dane, Paul Elvstrom, had no difficulty in reaffirming his superiority. In the Star class, a huge outcry was caused by the victory of the Soviets Pinegin and Shutkov, while in the Dragoon class, the Canadians McDonald, Livingston, and Norton prevailed. Finally, in the Flying Dutchman, the Rhodesian-Londoner Butler and his partner Bevan overturned the odds, ahead of the Norwegian favorites (Lunde and Bergvall).

In the second third and fourth regattas (30 and 31 August, 1 September) there were alternating results, especially due to the different sea conditions on those days.

On September 5, the fifth race started at noon. The sea was very calm and a light southwesterly breeze, which would later rise to twelve knots, inflated the sails, so in the Star the Italians Straulino-Rolando, who had been the negative surprise up to that point, re-emerged from the depths to clearly win the race, a victory that did not earn them a return to the podium zone. In the Flying Dutchman the race was won by the Norwegians Lunde-Bergvall who thus increased their chances for gold. Both Kenneth Harrison Albury, one of the Bahamian buccaneers, in the Finn class and the Englishmen Graham Hargrave Mann, Jonathan Janson and Ian Morton Hannay in the Dragoons gave themselves moments of glory. In the 5.5 the Stars and Stripes boat (George Dwyer O'Day-James Hawley Hunt-David James Smith) won again, still earning points over their direct rivals the Danes.
