BASILICA DI MASSENZIO
BASILICA OF MAXENTIUS
The Basilica of Maxentius is one of the most impressive monumental complexes in the archaeological area of Rome. Construction, begun by Maxentius in 303 AD, was interrupted by his death in 312 in the battle at Saxa Rubra won by Constantine. In 313 he completed the Basilica with part of the very daring vaults, over 35 m high from the ground. Three mats were placed under these vaults and all the competition services for the Greco-Roman wrestling and freestyle wrestling tournament were created. In front of the mat level, stands for the public and the press were installed (journalists had 20 telephone booths at their disposal); the changing rooms and services for the athletes (400 m2 with 8 showers, 7 WC and 5 sinks) were created in an area immediately behind the mat level, while public services found their way under the various stands.
No less evocative was the Basilica of Maxentius, beneath the ancient vaults of which the champions of free and Greco-Roman wrestling fought.
