THERMAE OF CARACALLA
Inaugurate nel 217 da Antonino Caracalla furono ritenute le più importanti dell'epoca per il complesso organico di piscine, calde e fredde, palestre coperte e scoperte, sale di ginnastica, di lotta, di ritrovo, eccetera. L'impianto per i Giochi della XVII Olimpiade fu eretto con elementi provvisori nella palestra laterale sinistra guardando il boccascena dell'attuale teatro lirico. Tutto il piano di gara restò completamente libero alla visuale in virtù di un sistema di travi di m. 40 di luce poggianti su quattro piloni e mediante sostegni laterali che avevano il gravame di staccare ciascuna opera nuova dalle antiche mura in ossequio ad un preciso vincolo della Sovraintendenza ai Monumenti. Il campo di gara di m. 36 X 18 fu opportunamente studiato allo scopo di rendere quanto più agevoli possibile sia gli spostamenti degli atleti da un attrezzo all'altro, sia la posizione dei giudici.
Inaugurated in 217 by Antonino Caracalla, they were considered the most important of the time for their organic complex of swimming pools, hot and cold, covered and open gyms, gymnastics, wrestling, meeting rooms, etc. The facility for the Games of the XVII Olympiad was erected with temporary elements in the left lateral gymnasium overlooking the proscenium of the current opera house. The entire tender floor remained completely free to view thanks to a system of 40-meter beams resting on four pylons and lateral supports that had the burden of detaching each new work from the ancient walls in compliance with a specific obligation of the Superintendency of Monuments. The 36 X 18 m competition field was appropriately designed to make both the movement of athletes from one apparatus to another and the position of the judges as easy as possible.

The Baths of Caracalla were adapted and used for gymnastics rehearsals, a truly exceptional theatre for an exceptional event.
