The torch of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games, designed by “Studio Carlo Ratti Associati”, points to a minimal and clean line that puts the flame in the center. The longitudinal opening gives a glimpse of the internal technology and supplies oxygen to the combustion.
The torch weighs approximately 1.06 kg. And its structure is designed to withstand wind gusts exceeding 100 km/h. It was engineered and produced in Italy by the “Cavagna Group” of Brescia with an external body made of recycled aluminum, internal brass parts and a handle with low environmental impact inserts (bio-based polymer).
The burner is powered by BioGPL (100% from waste and renewable raw materials, produced by Enilive). Additionally, the system is reusable and rechargeable up to 10 times, dramatically reducing the number of pieces needed for the relay.
"We wanted to strip away the superfluous," said Carlo Ratti founder of Studio Carlo Ratti Associati and professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston.  “That's what the Torch does, putting the flame in the center and minimizing everything else. Sustainability means not using what is not necessary. And so what we did with the Torch was put the flame in the center and minimize everything else”.
